Why “Kosovo”, not “Kos(s)owo” ? I agree, “Kos(s)owo” would make more sense regarding German orthography. “Kosovo” is indeed pronounced “Kossowo” in German, a “w” would make more sense as the letter “v” is sometimes pronouced more like “f”. Example: The “V” in “Veilchen” (German for: The Violet / Фиалка) is pronounced “f” like “Fedia” in Федя Крюков

The reason might be

a) to distinguish the Bulgarian region “Polsko Kosowo” from the Serbian province “Kosovo i Metohija” . Although both are pronounced identically, they are written differently in German

b) to distinguish the Polish city Kosowo (named Sensenfeld 1939-45 ) / the Polish city Kosowo (named Fliederhof 1878-1945 ) from the Serbian province “Kosovo i Metohija”

c) (the most likely) the German laziness. The Serbian Kosovo received its name from “Kosovo Polje” … the Serbian word “polje” translates to “field” (actually describing a karst field, here: Amselfeld), “kosovo” is a possession-registering adjective. “Kosovo Polje” - “Belongs to Amselfeld” (see: Battle of Kosovo - June 15, 1389)

Germans are lazy, at least too lazy to say / write “Kosovo Polje” … so it’s simply “Kosovo” in German. Since Germany is no longer permitted to engage in “empire building”, “fascism” and “starting illegal wars of aggression” - and had to transfer the role of the “Herrenmenschen” to the US - Germans degenerated and abolished their “aggressive national character” (although they are still being accused of having this character, almost uniquely by their American “friends”).

Now …

What is the actual economic or military benefit that the US derives from the occupation of Kosovo ?

Economic benefit: Nil

Military benefit: Another “country” to place “missle shields”, military bases, “Guantanamos”, “Abu Ghoreibs”, Mac Donalds, Taco Bells, … or other things the US taxpayer feels like wasting his money on.

Political benefit: Another “country” providing a stronghold for the US policy of “devide and rule” in Europe.

Well, I think that was enough polemics and anti-Amerikanism for today.

To me, this looks more like a case of misplaced nationalist pride to one’s own detriment.

Unrelated question, out of curiosity: why do you write “Kosovo” in German? Shouldn’t it be “Kosowo” or maybe “Kossowo”?
